Area of Development – Communication: Speech

Indicators typical for a child between the ages of 3 and 5 for this area:

  • Speaks clearly enough to be understood
    • Uses some slang words and common colloquial expressions
    • Generally produces all sounds of language accurately
    • Learns to say new words easily, even those with four or five syllables
    • Uses a dialect that matches peers and adults in family, neighborhood and geographic region
    • Uses dialect that patterns the rhythm, pitches, stress and intonation of geographic area and cultural background
