Standard: Math: Numbers and Operations

Specific skill focused on: Counting

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: Soup for One by Ethan Long

Song: “I Feel Crazy So I Jump in the Soup” (Laurie Berkner, Victor Vito)

Book: Eggs 1 2 3  by Janet Halfmann

Song: “Jumping and Counting” (Jim Gill, Jim Gill’s Irrational Anthem)

Fingerplay: “Five Little Monkeys Climbing up a Tree” (Unknown)

Five little monkeys climbing up a tree (Hold up five fingers then “climb” them up your arm)

Up to the top to see what they could see (Hold fingers up on top of head)

The monkeys looked left (Turn hand to the left)

The monkeys looked right (Turn hand to the right)

And one little monkey (Hold up one finger)

Jumped out of sight (Hide finger behind back)

Continue backwards four through one…

Book: Count the Monkeys by Mac Barnett

Song: “No More Monkeys” (Asheba, No More Monkeys)

Book: One Foot Two Feet: An Exceptional Counting Book by Peter Maloney

Activity: Octopus counting craft from Mrs. Karen’s Preschool Ideas blog

Thoughts: Counting is always an easy storytime theme to do – there are lots of great counting picture books to choose from and the craft ideas are endless. Jim Gill’s “Jumping and Counting” is one of my favorite songs for any storytime. I couldn’t find the source of the “Five Little Monkeys” fingerplay, so I apologize to the person I didn’t give credit to. This is one of the first fingerplays I learned when I started doing storytimes, and I’ve even had kids request it at my preschool outreaches.
