Storytime Share – Gross Motor: Movement and Coordination 2

Standard: Gross Motor: Movement and Coordination

Specific skill focused on: Gross Motor Skills (Superpowers)

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: Superhero School by Thierry Robberecht

Song: “Flying” (Recess Monkey, Flying!)

Book: Super Duck by Jez Alborough

Song: “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” (Choo Choo Soul, Disney Favorites)

Book: Bounce by Doreen Cronin

Song: “Jumping and Counting” (Jim Gill, Jim Gill’s Irrational Anthem)

Book: Anton and the Battle by Ole Konnecke

Activities: Superpower Worksheet and Superpowers Skill Training (see below)

In addition to the worksheet, I had a few other activities around the room so the kids could test their superpowers (and work on their gross motor skills). The kids had the chance to “fly” in a photo shoot (I staged it similarly to this one on the One More Mushroom blog), leap over tall buildings in a single bound (large cardboard blocks decorated to look like buildings), and show their strength by lifting a large weight (large plastic balls taped to each end of a wrapping paper tube).

Thoughts: I think the kids all had a good time with this storytime. A few kids took the worksheet very seriously, trying to come up with just the right superhero name and superpowers, and I think everyone enjoyed trying out their superpowers.
