Storytime Share – Math: Measurement 1

Standard: Math: Measurement

Specific skill focused on: Length and Height

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: Length by Henry Pluckrose

Song: “Eight Hundred and Thirteen Mile Car Trip” (They Might Be Giants, Here Come the 123s!)

Book: Along a Long Road by Frank Viva

Song: “Five Reasons to Ride My Bike” (Jeanie B and the Jelly Beans, Sugar Buzz)

Book: Up, Tall, and High! by Ethan Long

Song: “Jump Up, Turn Around” (Jim Gill, Moving Rhymes for Moving Times)

Book: For Good Measure by Ken Robbins (We didn’t actually read this entire book. Instead we focused on the “Lengths and Distances” section, looking at the different units of measure and discussing them.)

Activities: Length Worksheet (For each child, cut 1″ wide strips of paper in lengths of 1″, 2″, 3″, 4″, 5″, and 6″. Each child takes the strips and arranges them from shortest to longest and glues them on their paper.); Measurement Practice (I put out different types of measuring tools – rulers, yard sticks, measuring tape – and let the kids try them out by measuring the strips of paper on their length worksheets.); Height Comparison (I put up a 6′ sheet of butcher paper on the wall and let the kids mark their height on it. A few of the kids’ stuffed animals were measured, too.)
