Storytime Share – Early Literacy: Visual Sequencing (Patterning) 1

Standard: Early Literacy: Visual Sequencing (Patterning)

Specific skill focused on: Patterns

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: A Pair of Socks by Stuart J. Murphy

Activity: Sock Matching Game

There are lots of examples available online for this one. Basically, I made pairs of socks out of various colors and patterns of felt. Then I kept one sock from each pair and handed out the matches to the kids. As I put one of my socks up on the flannel board, the child with the matching sock would bring theirs up to accompany it on the board.

Song: “Old Sock Stew” (Jim Gill, Jim Gill Sings the Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes)

Book: Red Car Red Bus by Susan Steggall

Song: “Drivin’ in My Car” (Ralph Covert, Ralph’s World)

Book: A String of Beads by Margarette S. Reid

Song: “Kick Drum Heart” (Bari Koral Family Rock Band, Anna and the Cupcakes)

Activity: Bead Necklace craft

When I’ve done this craft in the past, I had the children string their beads on a piece of yarn or string. This proved pretty tricky for some little hands. So, this time around we threaded the beads onto pipe cleaners. It was still challenging enough without becoming completely frustrating.
