Storytime Share-Early Literacy: Print Awareness 2

Standard: Early Literacy: Print Awareness

Specific skill focused on: Names

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: A Porcupine Named Fluffy by Helen Lester

Song: “What’s the Name of That Song?” (Sesame Street, Bert & Ernie Sing-Along)

Book: Hello, My Name Is Ruby by Philip C. Stead

Song: “Dance Along Gong Song” (Jim Gill, The Irrational Anthem)

Book: My Name Is Elizabeth! by Annika Dunklee

Song: “Name Song” (Ralph’s World, Ralph’s World)

Book: Augie to Zebra: An Alphabet Book by Kate Endle

Activity: Name Stenciling

In our craft supply area we have a box full of old stencil templates (I think they used to be used for bulletin boards, but aren’t anymore). I give each child a sheet of paper, then put the stencils, pencils, and markers on the table. The children can pick out the letters of their names to trace or color in, practice writing their names, or even just play with the letter shapes. This is the open-ended type of activity I like to do quite a bit with this storytime.
