Storytime Share – Social Studies: History 5

Standard: Social Studies: History

Specific skill focused on: Games of the 1950’s

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: The Hula-Hoopin’ Queen by Thelma Lynne Godin

Song: “The Twist” (Chubby Checker, Billboard Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits, 1960)

Book: Luke Goes to Bat by Rachel Isadora

Song: “Great Balls of Fire” (Jerry Lee Lewis, Billboard Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits, 1958)

Book: Samantha on a Roll by Linda Ashman

Song: “At the Hop” (Danny & the Juniors, Billboard Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits, 1958)

Book: Girl & Gorilla Out and About by Rick Walton

Activity: Instead of doing a craft or worksheet this week, I let the kids try out various traditional games and activities that would have been popular in the 1950’s. I made a hopscotch board on the floor with masking tape, and put out hula hoops, jump ropes, and yo-yo’s. I got the idea for this storytime from the Collaborative Summer Library Program manual (page 83). I think it went well, and the kids really seemed to have fun playing at the end of the program.
