Storytime Share – Creative Arts: Art 2

Standard: Creative Arts: Art

Specific skill focused on: Matisse/Collage

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Activity: take a look at some of Matisse’s artwork, particularly his cut-paper collages

Book: Henri’s Scissors by Jeanette Winter

Song: “M-A-T-I-S-S-E, Matisse” (Hope Harris, Picasso, That’s Who!)

Book: Oodles of Animals by Lois Ehlert

Song: “Color Game” (Jim Gill, Jim Gill Sings Do Re Mi on His Toe Leg Knee)

Book: Actual Size by Steven Jenkins

Song: “Rock, Paper, Scissors” (The Not-Its, Kidquake)

Activity: Collages

I gave the children colored paper, scissors, and glue and let their imaginations run free. Because of the particular books we read several of them chose to make animals, but others just had fun using the scissors and glue to make abstract designs, too.
