Storytime Share – Math: Measurement 3

Standard: Math: Measurement

Specific skill focused on: Size – Big and Small

Song: “Shake My Sillies Out” (Raffi, Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Book: The Three Bears by Paul Galdone

Fingerplay: “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” from Let’s Play Music (Sheet music included, but I did it more like a chant than a song)

Book: The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

Song: “Mouse in the House” (Marty Dread & Friends, Reggae Playground)

Book: Big Bear, Little Chair by Lizi Boyd

Song: “Rock-a -Bye Your Bear” (The Wiggles, Hot Potatoes: The Best of the Wiggles)

Fingerplay: “This Is Big, Big, Big

Book: You Are (Not) Small by Anna Kang

Activity: Circle Necklace from Hands on As We Grow blog

The example on the blog shows putting circles in rainbow color order, but mine were a little more free form. I was just focused on size, so I put out circles of various sizes and colors (they were actually extras from previous crafts). I then instructed the children to pick out circles, arrange them by size smallest to largest, then punch a hole through them and string them onto yarn to make their necklaces. The kids seemed to enjoy the process of making the necklace, especially when they got to use the hole punches (which take quite a bit of strength for a preschooler).
