My name is Erin Nguyen. My library career began early when I was selected by my beloved school librarian Mrs. Hedge as one of her fifth grade library assistants. After that, I took a long break from working in libraries until after college when I did a brief stint as a clerk in a medical library. About a year later, in 2000, I found myself working as a library assistant in the children’s room of a large branch library in the Charlotte Mecklenburg system in North Carolina.
This is when I found my career path. I had always enjoyed working with children, and this job allowed me to combine that love with my passion for books, reading, and libraries. I worked in Charlotte for ten years, except for the year and a half that I spent at the University of South Carolina earning my MLIS. I worked my way up to children’s librarian and then children’s manager. While in Charlotte I also met my husband Ian, the library’s web designer. You can see one of our work collaborations on the Storyplace site in this story (I voiced the character of Firefighter Fran, and he did the animations).
In 2010 we moved to Knoxville, TN, my hometown, where I now work as the Children’s Services Manager. I have a wide variety of duties, but programming, particularly early literacy programming for preschoolers, has always been one of my favorite parts of the job. I am also now the mother of two sons, and it’s been eye-opening to see all the facts I’ve learned over the years about early literacy at work when I’m reading with them.
